Transports Codina opens a new nationwide frozen logistics centre in Osona

The Catalan family business Transports Codina has opened its new frozen logistics centre in Hostalets de Balenyà (Osona). The investment made amounts to 8 million euros and is expected to create around 10 direct jobs in the coming years. It is called CODINA GEL.

The new frozen warehouse is located next to the current one in the municipality of Hostalets de Balenyà and has been designed in two construction phases. This first phase, launched today, covers 35,000 m2 and will allow the storage of an additional 2,800 pallets, with a freezing tunnel. This tunnel can hold 33 European pallets (or 26 American pallets) per cycle at a temperature of -40ºC, thanks to a specific construction system using ammonia, a natural refrigerant that provides maximum safety and sustainability in line with the European strategy for environmental protection. The facility is equipped with a mobile racking room to make the availability and logistics management of all the stored food products as easy as possible, whether boxed, packaged or crated.

Together, the two phases will allow the 55,000 m2 facility to hold up to 5,000 frozen pallets, making it the leading frozen logistics centre in Central Catalonia. The facility will have 6 loading docks, 3 complete freezing tunnels, a picking area, mobile racking and specialised machinery.

The warehouse is already 100% sustainable, and the company is in the process of obtaining BREEAM certification. The building has been constructed using environmentally friendly materials and with a focus on energy efficiency, including natural energy systems such as solar panels and rainwater recovery, as well as a landscaping project using native, low-water-consumption plants.

This new frozen warehouse represents a new strategic line for the company, one it did not previously have access to. It is the realisation of an international expansion project aimed at new sectors and needs within the logistics market, supporting not only local businesses in the area but, thanks to its strategic location on the C-59 corridor between Barcelona and France, also becoming a key player in cross-border logistics with European markets.
